Outfit Stalking: Alice in “The Last Days of Disco”

This is Alice. She’s my favorite character in my favorite Whit Stillman film, The Last Days of Disco. She is also the owner of some quality outfits which (I recently realized) have greatly influenced my own style. This is my love letter.
image
Alice has all the chic evening wear to live up to the era namesake of the movie. This one-shoulder dress is my favorite. Look at it sparkle and swaaaay.imageShe has a simple A-line trench that effortlessly transitions from day to night (to day)
image
I’m most enamored with Alice’s office wear. She’s a Fancy Publishing Lady on The Rise who generally has papers in her hand. Important ones.
image
Her blouse game is especially on point. Like this one? It comes in two Liberty-style prints. Boom.imageAlice is also a master of skirts with pockets. She wears this particular one several times in the film, even extending into old photos. This + the trench coat = CHARACTER DEVELOPMENTimage
Even for an evening date: Pocket skirt & blouse game. Proper. Where’s my trench? We out.image
And last but not least, this one gives me so much life every single time I see it. Look at this goddamn shirt dress. The fabric, the color, the scrunchy yet professional draping. IT’S GLORIOUS. GAME OVER.imageEven Alice is having a hard time coming to terms with such sheer perfection. I feel you Alice, I feel you.

At first I thought “Oh what a lovely illustration” and then I realized that these are embroidered (!!!). More stunning images can be found in this collection of Otomi Indigenous Textiles and Fabric.
