While gallery hopping last night we came across the opening reception for photographer Viviane Sassen’s new portraits at Danziger Projects. I really fell in love with the splashes of vibrant colors and dramatic uses of shadow.

Costello Tagliapietra was one of the few fall 2010 shows I witnessed that was chocked full of traditional, rich autumn colors. Like leaves trickling down from a tree….a grown & sexy tree on a hot date in October.

A Good Look. Brought to you by Tim Hamilton.

Direct quote from the show description: “Yeohlee likes to imagine these clothes being worn in a postapocalyptic space station, by cadets making music with a saw.”

and that’s why I love her.

One of the most delightful highlights of fashion week wasn’t even an actual show. Kate Spade threw a fun, interactive party in honor of Rebecca Ward’s new installation piece. After the success of her previous work for their Tokyo shop, the artist was commissioned to customize her signature geometric tape sculpture throughout their Soho store. “The Tape Table” invited guests to decorate their own personal blank notebooks (with the apt inscription “live colorfully,” aw) using the same kind of tape that Rebecca uses in her installations. This was really an event after my own heart - a perfect mix of an art show opening, arts & crafts, and a cocktail party thrown by the best dressed girl you know.

Check out more photos and video from the shindig at Kate Spade’s official site.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child
Directed by Tamra Davis
2010

New documentary from Tamra Davis on artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. I’m a fan of both director and subject so I can definitely get into this. I got into Basquiat and jazz music when I started design school, so to me this is on point. Oh, to be a young starving artist. Sidenote: big fan of the Blue Note style typography” - waxandmilk

From the editors of the now defunct I.D. Magazine (R.I.P.) comes the new blog Sight Unseen. There’s always a glimmering light of hope online, my friends.

Scott Schuman and Elvis Mitchell, two of my favorite gentlemen, sit down for a chat on Elvis’ radio show/podcast The Treatment.

Rachel Comey’s collections are just really cool. There’s just no better way to put it. Set to the laid back, ambient sounds of the live band Hex Message, she unveiled a diverse mix of silhouettes and unique prints. Some of my favorite pieces were kind of channeling Jackie Burkhart (or maybe Donna Pinciotti…on a date).

I was running around at Milk Studios between presentations and missed most of Frank Tell’s show (sad face) but I managed to catch this (happy face).

I’ve always loved doing NY Fashion Week recaps but this time around I decided to try something different by taking my own runway shots. Over the week I was lucky enough to be able to focus on my personal favorites so expect to see a lot of color, shimmer, ruffles, eclectic patterns, and male models. General prettiness.

My very first show for fall 2010 was Ports 1961. I’ve always admired their gift for mixing textures and rich color palettes. They make the kind of clothes that I’d probably wear if I were a prolific mixed media artist with spots in various Biennials (not that I daydream about that sort of thing).
